Shape 5km Run

July 20, 2008

I’m so pleased with myself – I completed the 5km Shape run this morning.. and in 27min. For some 5km isnt a biggie – but being my first ‘marathon’ and a giver upper I’m proud of me self πŸ™‚ heee..

I’ve never been fond of marathons – simply for 2 reasons:

1) I’m not an avid runner

2) I hate crowds

Why???

So why did I sign up for the Shape run? An ex-colleague smsed a bunch of us about it and I figured, hmm why not give it a stab?

Training

Training wise – I wasn’t really planning to ‘train’ per se. I figured my weekly gym routine of approx 10 gx classes would help stamina wise, although I did feel pressurized by Ands and Ms Daisy who had been training – so I did start doing sporadic runs around my area for 20mins as well as a few tread mill attempts..

Anxieties

Last night tho, I must admit I was having a lil difficulty sleeping – anxiety crept in…. Ands and Joey were telling me I shouldn have done the 4km Nike practice run on Saturday and RESSSTT for the Shape run… Can you imagine I didn dare mention to them that I also did AF and BS too πŸ˜› But dear boo, said to not worry and take it ez and said my body’s immune to lotsa exercise so I’d be fine πŸ™‚

The Runners

Out of the 8000 gal power runners – I bumped into about 10? Mainly FFers, 2 ex students and other familar faces here and there. I also met the Shape run poster girl – and had a nice chat to her whilst waiting for Cl. Aside from recognising her from all the Shape publicity – she turns out to be And’s friends sis and I use to teach at her other sister’s SS – Tis a Smalllll world!!!!

Run baby Run

As for the ‘event’ itself… I ran solo – cos Cl was doing the 10km which started 5min earlier. Initially there’s a drove of people but like E said – eventually it filter’s out and there’s plenty of space to run. The first 2k was pretty easy – and of course I had my Nike band to help me gauge how much I distance traveled/had remaining. The heat was rather harsh and for some reason I wanted to go to the loo – but I did press on…. The last 1km was tuff – I kept thinking I was approaching the finishing line – fat chance haha. Felt really gd tho clearing the finishing line.

Like I said earlier – 5km maybe no sweat for most – but for me, I finished it despite wanting to give up a few times. I do hope that I use this as a reminder for the next ‘few’ challenges I will be facing in the next few months.

Picture Perfect. Daisy Marc Jacob Poster Girls

Hey peeps! Apologies for the blog hiatus, I’ve been busy facebooking – i’m a self-confessed addict!!! I’ve also been busy chi-chi-ing @ overrated, bloody expensive eateries & hanging out with my fave people. Forgiven???

Anyways, yesterday after W’s RPM @ Paragon, G, Y, E & myself headed towards the carpark and we happened to walk past the Marc Jacob’s Daisy Perfume roadshow. We happened to have a sniff at the scent samples, when the pretty emcee announced on the mike – I think I’ve found my 2 candidates (or something to that effect) the girl in the green Adidas jacket & her friend.. Haha….

So E & I went on the mini stage and she said we looked liked best friends and asked how long we’d known each other for. She then proceeded to the ‘guessing’ game. Basically E had to guess what my favourite colour was and I had to guess what E finds physically attractive in men. Well stupid me wrote down green – hinting to her by pointing to my fringe, so she guessed wrongly cos she missed my cue, but – I guessed correctly ‘eyes’ cos I recall she’s a fetish for small-eyed men, hehe…

Was a fun spontaneous encounter, we got to pose & have our shots taken – as you can see in the pic above πŸ™‚

Love ya E!!! πŸ™‚

………..

Celebrations are always tiring yea? But heaps of fun too πŸ™‚ This Nat day was a rather bz one….

  1. Spent the eve of National Day with Char @ Coffee club talkin’ ’bout frocks, make-up, Bkk among other things. Then Tini calls asking me to meet her @ Esplanade as her hubs was performing for the countdown.
  2. Nat day – Viv, Jas, Joey, Hans & I met @ Lau Pa Sat, then head over to near ORQ to check out the fireworks!!!
  3. Sat nite – gym buds came over for a Nat day party. The dresscode was red & white and the gang were so obliging – Cat looked cute in her cheerleader-like outfit, Ferns wore her pretty r/w skirt and r/w bauble chain & W wore a white T with red trimmings & tartan r/wΒ  shorts. Eil & I decided last minute to cook instead of ordering pizza, ironically, even though we cooked, someone ordered pizza anyways!!! hmphhh.. Eil was incharge of the rojak, onde onde & popiah, whilst I cooked the fried rice & wantons. We had lotsa fun preparing the food/eating, playing taboo/uno & watching the Ring. However, ‘certain’ criticisms about my fried rice, led me to loose my cool during the game of uno – oooPPPPPPS. hehehe..

Oh ya Happy B’day Singapore!!! May you continue to be a prosperous, safe & trail blazer nation!!!

    ………………………

Last Saturday night was a Sixties Nite at ORQ, orgaised by FF. It was a members party cum opportunity to checkout the NDP fireworks. E, Lily & I decided to dress up ah go-go style and had fun searching the net for 60’s fashion & makeup tips as well as dressing up for the actual night. I wore my new dress from Bangkok and E’s long suede boots which I fell in love with – so sassy & comfy!!!

It was a barrel of laughs getting into the cab, we probably looked like a trio setting out to work πŸ˜›

Gary & his AF gang won best dressed and rightly so. They actually got their ah mah/samsui tops tailored and even got fake plaits, the grandma mary janes & umbrellas. W dressed as a sarong party boy – hehe.

We had lotsa fun snapping piccys… The fireworks, well we didn’t really get to see it very clearly as the guests kinda crowded the windows ah well… After the event we headed to Asia Bar, boogying the night away πŸ™‚

Jan & I spent an awfully-productive-girly-day yesterday. She joined me for W’s bootcamp and survived it – onya gal! After lunch we headed to Suntec City to claim J’s nano prize only to be distracted by this new kid on the block! Currently there’s only 1 Promod store in Singapore and FYI its French-owned ok! Check out J’s buys and mine and my new bracelet – thanks J!

Good luck with figuring out your ibook-baby!!! πŸ™‚

    My yaya

Ain’t it funny how some friendships are? For instance, what are the odds of befriending your student??!!

Haha, my Yaya & I go back 6yrs now. She was my sec 2 Art student and my first impression of this girl – cute dimples! I remember she drew cats or something.. Anyways what happened was that T and her mum happened to be colleagues and invited them to church, to cut a long story short, she no longer called me Mrs Ong outside of school and we’ve been friends ever since πŸ™‚

Today, Yaya & I decided to dress up and have a nice meal together (we’re too comfy with each other that she complains we never make the effort to dress & eat well :P). We settled for Spagheddis @ Paragon followed by pump & step haha..

I guess you could say she’s like a little sister to me & I probably her big sister, but it’s this special bond when you both know you’re going to be friends for life πŸ™‚

I’m proud of u Yaya, you’ve really come along way since I met you. You’re smart, beautiful, quirky and you constantly spur me on and I love ya heaps…

My ex colleagues & my subsitute colleagues :)

Felt real loved yesterday πŸ™‚ Dearest Sharon organised a get together at Secret Recipe, Siglap. It was a mini-reunion cos Eu’s back for a holiday and they celebrated my birthday – so sweeeeeet.

It was juz like the good ol days – taunting ms Audrey Ferng, gossiping with Sharon, poking Tini’s tummy… sigh, I realised how much I missed my dear pals – whom I worked with for 6.5 years. I feel so blessed that we have this bond that’s kinda inseperable, despite the fact I don’t see them so often I know I can always call upon them in times of good or bad. 😦 Maannnnnn I really miss em. Even in the car ride to the bus stop, the laughs I shared with Sharon & Gail – priceless! πŸ™‚

    ……..

After a memorable lunch, I diligently went to Paragon FF early to do some marking b4 Mr W’s pump & step. Followed by dinner @ Clark Quay. Which was also a B’day celebration for me & Yola πŸ™‚ So sweet of Kris to organise it πŸ™‚ So as this blog entry title indicates.. My substitute colleagues are my gym buds (Eileen, Rodney, Glenny, Fernie & Yola) I told Sharon that a few weeks ago πŸ˜› Hee, hee – well since I don’t work fulltime anymore – I seriously don’t have a relationship with my current colleagues as I hardly see them. So seeing my gym buds at least 5xs a week, they’ve basically filled this void πŸ™‚ And I am grateful for their listening ears, encouragment & of course their shared enthusiasm for step, rpm, AF etc πŸ™‚

    Bootcamp Step Style! 16 & 17 June ’07

    June 18, 2007

    el_ag.jpg
    Pass or not??!!! Argghhhh…

    girl_steppers.jpg
    Relieved its OVER!!!!!!!!!

I survived the 2 Step course or should I say Boot camp :PIt was an awesome experience that I shall never forget – the physical endurance, the comaradery & the memorising of choreography as well as cues!

Day 1 – Jac (the Master Step trainer) introduced us to the Les Mills vision and we engaged in some traditional Maori greeting πŸ™‚ This was followed by a master class of Step Release 68. Oh yea, we were told of the tracks we had to prepare for and I was given track 3 – Don’t feel like dancin’ – which is supposively an easier track to master.

After meeting lotsa stepper enthusiasts & instructors; having lots of step drills & tips we were dismissed just before 6pm to prepare for our step presentation the next day. Referring to the somewhat complicated chorey notes & the video – I honestly started getting stressed – cos I’m terrible when it comes to memorising stuff & there’s really no room for forgetting the moves as our peers are suppose to follow our every move.. So after taking MORE than 2.5 hrs I was seriously ready to give up. I felt a fever, sore throat coming, was lamenting to Nav that I regretted taking the stupid course & seriously contemplated giving up ie. no show on Sunday!!!

But then…….. I recalled my climb up Mt Kinabalu a few yrs ago with Tini. I actually climbed half way up to Laban Ratan, which is about a 4.5hr hike and was pleased with that. Then the next morning we were to climb the more treacherous part which was the peak!!! As the altitude is high, the air is thin and I was feeling weak, exhausted and REALLY ready to give up!!! I had already made up my mind to tell Tini to go ahead and that I’d wait for her. Of course Tini & the porter would have nothing of that and instead spurred me on to continue the last leg of the journey. I remember, upon reaching the peak, the gorgeous sunrise and the satisfaction of completing the journey.. It was awesome & undescribeable annnnnd I was glad I completed the journey!

So going back to the step course… I think the compounded fatigue of the class observation-art market-church camp-in addition to preparing for the step course – made me tempted to throw in the towel… However, after recalling the analogy shared by Dr Weslake about the injured runner completing the race, I kinda figured it’d be such a waste of money if I were to not show up and it’d be really pathetic of me to call Ms E to tell her eh – I’m down with a fever/sore throat (which was really e case!) dun think I’ll be coming for the presentation..

So to cut a very lor soh (long) story short! I cleared/passed my presentations – even though I was TERRIBLY nervous especially during the first trial – I was commended for getting 100% spot on for me chorey (shOCK horror) but seriously need help with cueing – (giving instructions!!!)

So in summary, I think we did about 8-9 hrs of exercise within 2 days, had lots of fun interacting with fellow steppers and as I shared with Ange & Faye – I’ve a HIGHER respect for gym instructors – teaching is one thing yea, but to memorise choreography for different classes/tracks – fusing cues, adding funk & spunk – maaaaaaaaaaan I SALUTE Mr W, Faye, Ange, Xavier, Leonard etc etc – you guys are really something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Back from Church Camp & now gearing up for Step!!! arggh

    June 14, 2007

    camp1.jpg

Got back from our family church camp in M’sia – v v v v tired, but it was good! The preacher/teacher – Dr George Weslake aged 75 was inspiring! He’s a cross between Walt Disney & Ned Flanders (Simpsons) and yet he has the vitatlity of a 20 something!!! Even though he overwhelmed me with his Bible knowledge/theologies on Daniel & Revelation… for me the take home was (1) his illustration about this sprinter…. Basically he was recounting this Olympian participant who was running first, but unfortunately pulled his hamstring and still pressed on towards the finishing line… and had his proud father leap to the tracks to run with his son to complete the finishing line… The preacher basically said that God is right beside us as we press-on to complete this journey…task/s in life – that really spoke to me..

The other take home was (2) that sometimes in life we need to step out of our comfort zone.. Haha, and that speaks to me lots, coz I’ve got the Step course which is in 2 days time. Whilst I thought I’d take it on as a personal challenge/for fun – I’ve been getting rather anxious/stressed about it… the pressure from all my gym peers πŸ˜› hehe, but I take comfort knowing that sometimes God wants us to take on challenges, for character development and for reliance on Him. So dear God… please see me through this!!! Help me correct my moves and help me remember the choreography, cues and help me not be nervous!!!!!!!!!!!! ARGGGGGGGGHHHH…

On a happy note! I got plugged on the Clothes Project blog!

Breathing whilst I can afford to!!!

Me & the coz @ the Art market, Fort Canning

    ……….

Feel super exhausted, it’s been a crazzzzzzzzzzzy week… It’s like 1 day seems like a week ago, and the last week seems like a month ago – do you identify with me???!

    Week in review:

    • Step x 4, pump x 2, rpm x 2, AF x 1
    • Celebrated Cat’s bday at Da Dong
    • Celebrated Aunty Hyma’s 60th & met some of Nav’s long lost paternal rellies
    • Had my lesson ob!!!!!! argggggggh
    • Indulged in Sun & Moon’s delectable Jap, not to mention the gorgeous tofu cheesecake & green-T tiramisu!!!!
    • Participated in the Art Market @ Fortcanning

Has been an eventful week, preparing for my lesson observation, preparing for step – trying to memorise moves…, then of course preparing for the art market. Speaking of which – thanks muchly to all of you who came by – a good mix of ex colleagues, students from SP & PL πŸ™‚ church buds, gym buds & the misc buds πŸ™‚ It was a fantastic opportunity for me to see people actually purchase my tape-measure brooches andΒ  bread-tag earrings, as well as my global finds from India, Bangkok & China. Special thanks to the coz for making day 1 fly and to Judy for accompanying me day 2!

Tomorrow till Thurs is church camp, which I’m now looking forward to – the spiritual enlightenment, as well as the break from the mental & physical fatigue of everything…

Then of course there’s Friday – a breather before the scarrrrrrrrrrry step course – which I’m sure is going to be enlightening too πŸ˜‰

So there you have it a fusion of my 3 passions in life – Art, Christ & Gym, with all my loved ones in between! haha…

    Till then…. cheerios!
